Books About Dogs

Reference Books about DogsThere are so many great books about dogs out there, but a few have been extraordinarily helpful to us as we researched recommendations for choosing dogs by breed and type, and we felt it would be really useful to share our favorite books about choosing and understanding breeds with you here, along with the reasons why they made the cut. If your are looking to research dog breeds or find out more about dogs in general, you can’t do better than the ones in our list below.

Books That Help You in Choosing the Right Dog

Doing the research for this website has led us to read and discover many useful books about dogs that can help you in choosing the right dog for your family and lifestyle.

Though there are many helpful websites that are of excellent quality, we felt that consulting books was a bit more reliable when doing this research, simply because many websites do not cite where information was gathered from. Book bibliographies make the process of backing up opinions about breed studies and personality tests much easier.

In the list below, we used the American Kennel Club book to help with the structure of our research, since the breed portion of our website is organized by AKC breed groups.

Couple reading a book with their dogWe also got a lot of additional reference information about breeds from both Cunliffe’s and especially Morris’ book, which is quite thorough and contains many, many breeds from all over the world organized by the purpose for which they were originally bred, which we found quite helpful.

We were able to look at specific recommendations regarding temperament and general sociability with children in the Kilcommons, Tortora and Gerstenfeld books. Tortora’s book is quite old and has some outdated information, but contains a goldmine of data, with tests and charts that we could compare with the other books to get a more well-balanced view. We highly recommend all of the following books, all for different reasons. If you are desiring to do additional research, you may want to check these out at your local library or visit your bookstore and see all that they can offer.

In addition to being highly useful to our website research, we feel that out of all the references, the ASPCA Complete Guide to Dogs is probably the best all-around dog guide book to have, whether you are researching for or already have a dog. There is a little bit of everything in that book, and it is beautiful to look at too, with many wonderful photographs.
