Harry Potter Dog Names page- Image #1 - Cute terrier dressed up in Harry Potter glasses and a wizard's outfitHarry Potter magic has swept the world! Why not bring a little of the magic into your own house and name your dog a name right out of one of the Harry Potter movies or books?

Harry Potter Dog Names, huh? When you were reading this wonderful series, would you have ever thought of looking for unique dog names between the pages? We happen to think that names taken from the Harry Potter series can be wonderful choices for your favorite furry friend!

We all hated to see the books come to an end with J.K Rowling's 7th and final installment to the series, but these characters are now legendary, and the stories will last forever as favorites for kids and adults alike.

Why not name your favorite dog a name from the Harry Potter series? Certainly many unusual dog names can be found in J.K. Rowling's masterpiece.

We have assembled names from characters, as well as places mentioned in the book series, and some of the magical creatures that they came across as well. We feel that the names in our list could all translate as great dog names too. Some are cute, some are mysterious and some are downright funny if you let yourself imagine them for your dog! If you are looking for unique dog names, these might be right up your alley (be it Daigon or Knockturn...)

So let's hunker down in Arthur Weasley's Ford Anglia car and fly over Hogwarts School of Witchcraft Wizardry and the surrounding areas to see what Harry Potter dog names we can conjure up for our lovable dogs, shall we?

(Make sure that you watch out for that Whomping Willow!)

A List of Male Dog Names
From the Characters in Harry Potter

Imagine these Harry Potter dog names working for your favorite furry guy
Harry Potter Dog Names -Image #2- Magical Blue Star in a Bell Jar

Albus 1st name of the headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore

Colin (as in Creevey) The younger student who is a budding photographer and Harry's unwanted shadow at times.

Dobby Looking for funny dog names? Name your dog after the Malfoy family's house-elf!

Kreacher How about naming your dog after the house-elf for Sirius Black and family?

Draco (as in Malfoy) Draco means dragon, by the way....

Gilderoy The first name of Professor Lockhart, Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, who is a bit of a sham.

Harry or is it "Hairy" Potter? -the main man in the series.

Ronald or Ron (as in Weasley). Harry's guy-friend sidekick.

Lucius Of course this is Draco Malfoy's dad. The name is supposed to mean "light," but he lives more on the dark side.

Diggory Love this!! This funny Harry Potter dog name has an air of sophistication about it. Do you have a digging dog? Maybe this Harry Potter character name is just right for him! This is the surname of Cedric, Amos and Dedalus, by the way.

Lupin (as in Professor Lupin) Bitten by a werewolf when he was young, the professor endures the problems that would befall every werewolf. Because of the wolf's close association with dogs, Lupin could make a wonderful dog name.

Nearly Headless Nick Hmmmm- a stretch in the pet names for dogs department, but this could be funny for a dog with a short neck or small head. Just call him Nick for short.

Sirius One of the most perfect Harry Potter dog names! Sirius is the "dog star" but in the books, refers to Sirius Black, an escapee from Azkaban (and much more!)

Hogwarts How about this for a cool dog name? Think of this one in terms of those British male names that end with "s" like Jeeves, Giles, etc. Could be a little on the snooty side, perhaps, but in the books, of course, this ins the name of the beloved school where the young witches and wizards go for training.

Muggle This could be a great name for a small dog! (especially of the non-magic variety)

Hagrid The big lovable giant that is the keeper of the magical creatures and, later, a professor at Hogwarts. Could work really well for a giant breed like a Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound or the like.

Gryffindor Show that you're a Harry Potter fan by naming your dog after one of the four houses at Hogwarts. Although this is the last name of one of the Hogwarts founders (Godric Gryffindor), it has a nice ring to it for a dog. It is a very recognizable Harry Potter name, too. Hey! Godric isn't bad name for a Harry Potter dog name either.

Malfoy The surname for Draco and the others from that nasty family!

Patronus the name of an important spell, but could also be a great dog name- rather stately sounding, I think!

Padfoot The alternative name for one of the major Harry Potter characters- an Animagus that changes into a black dog- the perfect Harry Potter dog name!

Buckbeak The name of one of Hagrid's favorite magical creatures- a Hippogriff (a creature whose front half is gryphon and back half is a female horse. A gryphon, by the way, is half eagle/half lion. Wouldn't this be a funny name for a dog with crooked teeth, an underbite, etc.?)

Fluffy The three-headed dog who guards the passage to the Sorcerors Stone. This would be a funny name for a tough dog (Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd).

Scabbers Ron's pet rat (and more!). Could be a silly name for a tiny dog (Chihuahua, Yorkie)

Harry Potter Dog Names- Image of a cute, scruffy, terrier pup who has an evil name!Fang Hagrid's large dog- a boarhound. A great name for either a tough dog OR a funny name for a really cute-faced dog. Imagine a Westie named Fang....NOTE: "Boarhound" is a classification of a number of large breeds that hunt boars. Much like there are many dogs who fit into the category of "sighthound" (Greyhound, Borzoi, etc.), Great Danes and several other giant breeds fit into the boarhound category. In the Harry Potter films, Fang was played by a Neopolitan Mastiff, a breed that is of the boarhound category of dogs.

AND OUR LAST TWO FAVORITES:

Heir of Slytherin call him "Heir" or "HOS" as a nickname!

He Who Must Not Be Named You know who, right? Isn't this a great name for a cute, scruffy terrier or mixed breed- simply hilarious!! Call him "He" or "He-Who" for short!

Harry Potter Dog Names:
A List of Female Dog Names
From the Characters in Harry Potter

Here are some really unique female dog names chosen from the Harry Potter characters!

Harry Potter Dog Names - Image #3- Magical SwirlRosmerta as is Madam Rosmerta, proprietor of The Three Broomsticks- a pub in Hogsmeade. This could be a feminine, old-fashioned name for your girl doggy.

Hermione the best-known female Harry Potter character. Harry's best girl friend (but not girlfriend). Especially nice for a dog with longer ears and a curly coat, we think this makes a great Harry Potter dog name for your female dog.

Cho as in Cho Chang, Harry's first love interest. Cho is the Japanese word for butterfly -this could be a perfect Harry Potter dog name for a Papillon (also which means butterfly in French!)

Bellatrix If you're looking for a name with a dark edge to it, this one might be just the one for you. Bellatrix Lestrange is Sirius Black's cousin and is a dark wizard with a bit of craziness mixed in. For the goth dog in your family!

Hedwig a perfectly unique girl dog name if you are naming a white dog that is extremely intelligent. It derives from the Old German language. Of course, Hedwig is Harry's female snowy white owl, who brings him messages and letters. She is very trustworthy and loyal. Be a trustworthy and loyal Harry Potter fan and name your dog after Harry's favorite pet.

Nymphadora this could be a great dog name for a prissy girl dog. In the Harry Potter series, Nymphadora can change her appearance, and is considered a Metamorphagus. As great as that sounds, she is not very smooth- she's a bit clumsy and can't use this power to her full advantage. Nymphs are like nature sprites.

Luna What a pretty name for a dog! Luna means the moon, and Luna Lovegood is the good-hearted, slightly spacey student that befriends Harry and the gang. She is innocent and off on a different plane most of the time, which makes her rather charming.

Moaning Myrtle This could be a funny name for a breed that howls, especially a Basset Hound!

Narcissa Do you have a girl dog that thinks it is "all about her?" Narcissists are really into their own looks and the world revolves around them (at least in their own minds!) Narcissa is Lucius Malfoy's wife and Draco's mom.

Harry Potter Dog Names- Picture of a magical wizard shaped gnarled tree stumpMinerva as in MacGonagall. She is the Deputy Headmistress that takes various positions of power at Hogwarts, Head of Gryffindor House, she is grounded, steady leader. She is also an Animagus who takes the form of a tabby cat. Minerva could be a nice Harry Potter dog name, don't you think?

Honeydukes This just sounds adorable! Honeydukes Sweetshop is the wizarding candy store in Hogsmeade. This could be a great dog name for your little sweetie-pie.

Ginny as in Ginny Weasley, Ron's younger sister who is interwoven into the stories. Ginny makes a really cute female dog name, we think.

Fleur another pretty dog name. This one comes from one of the wizards who competes in the Tri-Wizard Tournament- Fleur Delacour of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic.

Hufflepuff a cute name for your little furball. This comes from the name of one of the four houses at Hogwarts, named after its founder, Helga Hufflepuff.

Mrs. Norris This could be a funny dog name! This is actually the name of Filch's cat. Filch is the caretaker of Hogwarts.
