A Poodle Mixed Pup Can Be a Good Family Dog Option
The "poo," or poodle mixed pup is one of the most popular types of mixed breed dog. Why? Because the combination generally creates a loving, playful, easy to train dog -and in the case of mixes that include the larger Standard Poodle- generally one that is great with children! Of course each dog is an individual with their own temperament, but many people tout the intelligence and affection of poodle mixes as being one of the best reasons to bring them into a family. Over the past few decades, one of the most popular types of poodle mixed dogs has been the Cockapoo. A combination of a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle, this combination was at one time so well-received that they often sold for nearly the same as purebred Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. In reality, they are a mixed breed and not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but in the distant future it is possible that one or more of the poodle mixes may become a real recognized breed. More recently Labradoodles (Labrador Retriever and Poodle Mixes) and Goldendoodles (Golden Retrievers and Poodle Hybrids) have come into favor. Many people find their coats easier to tolerate because poodles are low-shedding dogs. There is always more variations between pups in the same litter though, and it really depends on the coats of the individual poodle hybrid pups. Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are still somewhat difficult to easily locate, and are not readily available in shelters, so you will generally have to pay a premium price to a breeder for one of these hybrids. In addition to the whimsical Labradoodle and Goldendoodle names, a number of other poodle mixed pups can be found with comical name combinations. Consider the:
- Maltipoo (Maltese and Poodle)
- Doxiepoo (Dachshund and Poodle)
- Springerdoodle (English Springer Spaniel and Poodle)
- Pugapoo (Pug and Poodle)
and the- Schnoodle (Schnauzer and Poodle)
And of course there is always the old joke: Q: What do you get when you mix a Cocker Spaniel, a Poodle and a Rooster?
A: A Cocker-Poodle-Doo! (We don't think that one will make it into the AKC registers any time soon!!)
