Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) does a study at the beginning of each year of the most popular dog names that come in on pet insurance policy applications for the previous year. Since they are the largest pet insurance company in the United States, their database offers a clear view of the dog name trends that are happening across the country.
The most recent full list published for the top 100 dog names, which was released in January of 2009, showed again that Max took the top spot in the list, and you will notice that the names are mostly two syllable "people" names. Check out the full list below.

For the first year in a long time, the top dog spot (for the name Max) has been pushed out of position by a girl dog name: Bella. One has to wonder if the Twilight series of books and movies have had an influence....
